Cool Ocean Conservation Efforts in Canada
Updated: Mar 18, 2022
It can be easy to get swept up in the doom-and-gloom media being thrown our way through social media, news channels, and websites. This can lead to climate change fatigue which can be overwhelming and lead to a sense of defeat. When all we see are videos and images of raging wildfires, flooding coastlines, and suffering people, we tend to feel as though we have failed and reached a point of no return. This has led to many people feeling ‘apocalypse exhaustion’ and the avoidance to take action or even talk about climate and environmental topics.
(If you are interested in learning more about ‘apocalypse fatigue’, watch this Ted Talk!)
Canada has the longest coastline in the entire world, bordering the Pacific, Atlantic, and the Arctic oceans. We see the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise but there are many motivated people in our country working hard to protect our oceans and marine species! Inspired by these efforts, we are working towards eliminating plastic in our own nature kits. Let’s take a look at some inspiring ocean conservation efforts listed below!
This is an awesome Ocean Wise initiative focused on researching and joining forces with partners to grow and restore seaweed forests at scale as seaweed is an amazing sequesterer of CO2.
“By growing and restoring seaweed forests at scale, we believe we can remove CO2 from the atmosphere and create an ocean-based climate change solution.”
Unsustainable fishing practices are one of the biggest threats to our oceans and marine species. Overfishing disrupts the underwater ecosystem and can push some species into endangerment. WWF has many initiatives to implement healthy and sustainable fishing practices.
“WWF-Canada has partnered with fisheries on sustainable practices so marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods can thrive.”
Sea Legacy is an organization based on Vancouver Island that strives to protect our ocean through global initiatives, expeditions, campaigns, and through media. Sea Legacy seeks to find solutions to critical problems within our oceans and coastal communities. The solutions involve sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas, green ocean farming, marine permaculture, and coral reef revitalization.
“Today, our oceans are at the limits of their resilience. However, when we protect critical ecosystems, prevent pollution, and carefully manage fishing, our oceans bounce back. Against all odds, vibrant life flourishes.”
The Plastic Ocean Initiative is working towards direct action through education, science, and awareness initiatives. The organization works alongside educators to bring awareness and engage with students of all ages. The outreach programs are hand-on and allow youth to get involved in projects which help to build inspiration and motivation for the protection of our oceans.
“Plastic Oceans Canada’s mission is to solve plastic pollution. Plastic Oceans Canada creates change by advocating for Canadian businesses to take impactful steps towards eliminating their plastic pollution footprint, driving towards implementation of changes with government producers, recyclers and consumers and supporting and implementing programs to clean our coastlines.”
We are super excited to share these initiatives with you. If you know of any more interesting movements fighting for ocean conservation efforts - please reach out and let us know!
